Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest

Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest is a 2D sidescrolling platform adventure game with RPG elements developed by Konami for the Nintendo Entertainment System. In fact, this, along with Metroid on the same system, are some of the earliest examples of what we now call metroidvania. Continue reading “Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest”

Castlevania

Castlevania is a 2D sidescrolling platformer by Konami for the Nintendo Entertainment System. There are a few other versions of the same game, but I’ll be talking about this one as I experienced it both through the NES version and the GBA port of that version. Continue reading “Castlevania”

Doom

Doom is a first-person shooter developed by Id Software for MS DOS. It’s one of the most popular and important first-person shooters out there. I doubt you’ve never heard of it. It has been ported tons of times, played on many devices, and still seems to stand the test of time. It wasn’t the first first-person shooter, but it’s definitely one of the first ones to come to mind when you think of the genre. So what is it about this game that makes it so damn appealing? Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia is the third Castlevania installment on the Nintendo DS. This game follows the same gameplay style of 2D adventure platformers commonly known as metroidvania. This review assumes you either know about such games already or have at least seen previous reviews I’ve made in the series. Most of the main gameplay ideas are carried over here with abilities, exploration, relics and the like. The basic plot (which I will now butcher with terrible details of understanding) is that this group of people, the Order of Ecclesia, have been training two promising youths to be able to absorb these powerful magical symbols called glyphs. The idea is that one day soon Dracula will return, but the one with the power of the Dominus glyphs will be able to defeat him. During the training, you, Shanoa, are chosen to house Dominus. The other, Albus, leaves in a jealous rage and pursues the glyphs himself. So it’s up to you to track him down and find Dominus before he does so that you can defeat Dracula. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon

Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon is the 3DS sequel to the GameCube game Luigi’s Mansion. Since this was the first one I played I’m going to probably be explaining things that are common sense to fans of the first. I apologize for not knowing what’s new and what’s old. The main plot of the game is that the ghosts have stolen pieces of the dark moon and hidden them, using the power to open a portal to another dimension where they can bring in more ghosts. This is a problem because it’s creating a dimensional imbalance that could collapse your dimension. So Professor E. Gadd has once again recruited Luigi, armed with a new and improved version of the ghost-sucking vacuum the Poltergust 5000, to help capture the ghosts so they can reassemble the dark moon and restore balance. Continue reading “Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon”

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin is a metroidvania game for Nintendo DS. The main story is basically that you have to control two characters trying to unlock the power of the Vampire Killer whip, defeat the evil vampire in Dracula’s Castle, and keep the evil creatures from resurrecting Dracula himself.
